Chemistry at Montclair State University.  It is meant

*******************  APPLICATION ******************** 
To apply one must submit a completed application and fee
to the graduate school office.  Only completed applications will
be sent to the chemistry department for consideration.


The application contains: 
     FORM A - Candidate information and experience 
     FORM B - Statement of objectives 
     FORM C - Letters of recommendation (Two are required.) 
     FORM "D" - Application for Teaching Assistantship (Optional) 

Additional credentials required: 
     GRE general test (subject test is not required) 
     Transcript from each college attended.  (Non- US 
          transcripts must be evaluated by World Education 
          Service on a "course by course" basis.) 
     TOEFL (If English is not your first language) 
  
*******************  PREREQUISITES ****************** 
In general, a person with a chemistry B. S. degree 
from a US university will not have to take any prerequisites. 
Others will have to complete or have completed the following 
courses before full admission: 

    General Chemistry I and II with labs 
    Organic chemistry I and II with labs 
    Calculus I and II 
    General Physics I and II 
    Physical Chemistry I and I (No lab required) 
    Analytical Chemistry with lab 
    Instrumental Analysis with lab 

*******************  DEGREE PROGRAMS **************** 
There are two possible degrees awarded by the department
     1) An M. S. in Chemistry 
     2) An M. S. in Chemistry with a Concentration in Biochemistry
there are two options to fulfill the research requirement within each degree
     1) A research and thesis option
     2) A literature paper option
The requirements for these two degrees are listed below


M. S. in Chemistry 

Literature Paper Option:
 15 credits of 500 level chemistry courses 
  9 credits of 400 level or above chemistry or related courses 
  6 credits of 500 level electives in any subject 
  2 credits of research - a literature paper

 32 credits total 

Research and Thesis Option
 15 credits of 500 level chemistry courses  
  5 credits of 400 level or above chemistry or related courses 
  6 credits of 500 level electives in any subject 
  3 credits of laboratory research (1 + 2 in two semesters) 
  3 credits - masters thesis

 32 credits total 

M. S. in Chemistry with a Concentration in Biochemistry 

Literature Paper Option  
 21 credits of 500 level chemistry courses of which 12 must be Biochemistry 
  9 credits of 400 level or above chemistry or related courses 
  2 credits of research - a literature paper

 32 credits total 

Research and Thesis Option  
 21 credits of 500 level chemistry courses of which 12 must be Biochemistry   
  5 credits of 400 level or above chemistry or related courses 
  3 credits of laboratory research (2 + 1 in two semesters) 
  3 credits - masters thesis
