MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSTIY
Proposed Doctoral Program

Montclair State University's first doctoral program, an Ed.D. in Pedagogy has been designed for those who aspire to be models of teaching excellence, leaders among their colleagues and spokespersons for education in the state. For those who wish to develop further professionally the Ed.D. provides the highest level of expertise in teaching, leadership, and educational reform. Montclair State's Ed.D. program is designed to educate teachers in how to best implement new theories and practice understandings about teaching, learning and the role of schools in our society while probing deep into discipline content.

Two areas of specialization are already being offered: Mathematics Education and Philosophy for Children. We seek to enable science classroom teachers and those interested in science education to pursue a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, advanced degree as part-time or full-time, evening, and summer students in science education.

Montclair State's proposed Ed.D. in Science Education is being designed for experienced and successful middle and secondary classroom teachers who already have a strong preparation in the physical and natural sciences or individuals with a Master of Science in a science education field plus certification. The program will add both depth and breadth to their subject areas as well as their pedagogical knowledge. The curriculum will reflect state and national recommendations. This program will aim to foster interdisciplinary approaches across the sciences and with other disciplines, to encourage alternative approaches to the teaching and learning of the sciences, and to develop quantitative and qualitative methods of research in science education.
