- One of the eight participating students will play the additional role of the peer mentor. In this capacity, you will assist the project director in various logistics tasks prior, during and after the summer. These tasks include:
communication with the student participants prior to their arrival in campus
preparation of supporting materials for the site (local information, updates, etc.)
organization of the arrival sequence (including airport pickup and room check-in)
travel to and from various activities during the summer period
organization of mini-sessions at the beginning and end of the summer
organization of the departure sequence (including airport drop-off and room check-out)
- It is expected that the peer mentor has a local background, and, as such you will provide support to your peers in some of the day to day activities such as shopping, travel to local attractions, etc.
- This is a highly valued position as it will allow you to gain valuable experience in program management and logistics.
- The above tasks are in addition to the main focus of the summer: working on a research project within the REU 2009 program. You will still have to live and work in campus.
- Due to the specific tasks, special attention will be paid to applications received from MSU students or from students with a local background.
- To compensate for this additional responsibility, the program provides for an additional stipend of up to $1200.
