    Santa Fe Institute

    Edward A. Knapp Undergraduate Fellows

    June 4 - August 10, 2012

Details: The program provides an opportunity for young scientists from many disciplines to explore what a social science perspective brings to other fields and how traditionally quantitative disciplines can contribute to the social sciences.

21st century scientists increasingly rely on computational models and strategies. The social sciences in particular are benefitting from new modeling techniques, improved computing power, new ways of measuring social phenomena, and quantitative methods drawn from physics, chemistry, biology, economics, and other disciplines. As a result, important questions previously inaccessible to quantitative exploration are now reachable.

SFI’s REU program provides an opportunity for young scientists from many disciplines to explore what a social science perspective brings to other fields and how traditionally quantitative disciplines can contribute to the social sciences. Each REU participant works with one or more SFI faculty mentors on a specific, mutually selected projects focusing on the computational properties of complex systems with particular, but not exclusive, emphasis on the social sciences. Possible focus areas include emergence in decision- making and cognitive systems; network structure and dynamics; cities, scaling, and sustainability; risk, markets, and innovation; and the evolution of languages. See Santa Fe Institute Profile

Participants are expected to be in residence in Santa Fe for approximately 10 weeks, from June 4 to August 10, 2012.
    Support

Housing and a partial meal plan will be provided, at no cost to the student, in single-occupancy rooms with shared bathrooms at St. John's College in Santa Fe. Modest living stipends will also be provided to interns during their stay, along with some support of round-trip travel expenses from the home institution. Because Santa Fe lacks a full public transportation system, we encourage those interns who can bring their private transportation to do so. Additional information regarding logistics can be found on the REU Wiki Page

    Eligibility

For the purposes of this program, an undergraduate student is one who is enrolled in a degree program (part-time or full-time) leading to a bachelor's degree. Students transferring from one institution to another who are enrolled at neither institution during the intervening summer may participate. College seniors graduating in Spring 2012 are not eligible; nor are graduating high school students who have not yet enrolled as undergraduates.

Strong mathematical skills and experience with a programming language are favorably considered. Students from all backgrounds in the physical, natural, and social sciences are invited to participate. National Science Foundation funds are limited to supporting U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Women and minority students are encouraged to apply.

Come hear about opportunities for the
2012 Summer Undergraduate Research Program at
The Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University

The Department of Biology and Molecular Biology cordially invites you to a
    seminar by:

    Dr. Lauren Aleksunes, Pharm.D., Ph.D.
Assistant Professor , Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology
The Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University
Kidney Transporters as Regulators of Target Organ
Toxicity and Summer Fellowship Program at The Ernest Mario School of
    Pharmacy at Rutgers University

Meeting is in Richardson Hall 120, MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY.
    Thursday February 2, 2012 at 4:00PM

Summary: "Our laboratory investigates how drug transporters protect against accumulation and toxicity
of pharmaceuticals and environmental contaminants. Within the kidneys, apical efflux
transporters enhance renal excretion of drugs and prevent nephrotoxicity. Similarly, these
efflux pumps participate in maternal-fetal xenobiotic disposition, thereby protecting the
developing fetus from toxicant exposure. Our laboratory utilizes state-of-the-art molecular
biology, cell biology, in vivo animal, explant human tissue, and
pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic approaches to study drug transporters. Attention is
placed upon the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation and function of MDR/PGP,
MRP, and BCRP drug transporters. Of particular focus is the disposition of chemotherapeutic
agents (such as cisplatin, Platinol®) as well as environmental contaminants.
Better understanding of how drug transporters protect against adverse events and
environmental toxicant exposure will enhance prediction of drug-drug interactions as well as
provide for the assessment of clinically-relevant single nucleotide gene polymorphisms."

Greetings! Please pass these these opportunities on to students and other
    faculty in your department.

    1. The Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) is offering two paid summer
    research internships in 2012:

Undergraduate Studies in Earthquake Information Technology (UseIT) is an 8-week
team-based undergraduate research program that allows students to work in
multi-disciplinary collaborative teams to tackle a scientific "Grand Challenge"
where they use the advanced tools of information technology to solve important
problems in interdisciplinary earthquake research. During the 2011 internship
the focus of the program was to develop a Seismic Sequence Visualization System
based on SCEC-VDO and GIS that can display earthquake sequences, monitor their
evolution in space and time, and assess their hazards and risks. SCEC-VDO is the
SCEC intern-developed visualization software that allows the user to see
earthquake related phenomena in three dimensions.

The SCEC Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) is an 8-10 week program
that pairs a student, one-on-one, to conduct research with a pre-eminent
earthquake scientist or specialist. Many SURE interns also have the opportunity
to work alongside graduate students and post-doctoral researchers, and thus gain
the special perspective of these early career professionals.

Priority application DEADLINE for both programs is: 27 February 2012
Learn more about and apply to UseIT and SURE at: internships
Questions? Send a message to: internships@scec.org

    2. Research Experiences in the Solid Earth Sciences for Students (RESESS) is an
11-week paid internship program based in Boulder, Colorado, in which interns do
research on a project of interest to them with a scientist at the U.S.
Geological Survey, University of Colorado, NOAA, or UNAVCO. Topics include
geology, geomorphology, hydrology, seismology, paleoclimatology, glaciology,
geophysics, geodesy and more. The program includes a writing class, mentoring,
field trips, and a supportive community. RESESS provides travel to Boulder,
housing, a competitive salary, and a partial scholarship for the following
academic year. This program is intended to increase diversity in the geoscience
workforce by supporting students from underrepresented groups on their path to
graduate school, and encourages applications from Native Americans, African
Americans, Hispanic Americans, and disabled Americans. Please go to our APPLY
and FAQ pages for more information.

Paid positions open on campaign staff: The Fund for the Public Interest

The Fund for the Public Interest is a national non-profit organization that works to build support
for progressive organizations across the country. We run campaigns for the Sierra Club, the Human
Rights Campaign, USPIRG, and Environment America. This summer we will be in over 50 cities,
working and lobbying to help win environmental and social justice campaigns.

Last summer our staff helped ban off-shore drilling to protect our coasts, repeal Don't Ask Don't
Tell, and increase food safety standards to make school lunches safer- all while building valuable
    leadership skills.

Currently, we have paid positions open on our campaign staff in each of our locations. We require
that interested candidates are hard workers and have excellent communication skills.

As a member of our staff, you will fund-raise, build membership for our partner groups, and
educate and activate citizens on pressing issues. You will also have the opportunity to organize
press conferences and build coalitions with other non-profit organizations. While on staff, you
gain knowledge of pressing concerns our country is facing, learn how to effectively generate
public support, and obtain a firm understanding of the political process.

We will be holding information sessions and interviews at Montclair State February 21st and 22nd
at 10 am, 2 pm, 4 pm and 6 pm each day. To apply, please visit www.jobsforgoodcauses.org or call
    800-75-EARTH (753-2784).

ploration, and environmental and cultural conservation worldwide.

The National Geographic Society/Waitt Grants Program funds proj-
ects that require venture capital, supporting exceptional proj-
    ects while foregoing a time-consuming peer-review process. NGS/
Waitt grants are designed to fund "proof of concept" research for
applicants at an earlier stage in their careers than other NGS
grant programs. Special emphasis is placed on expedited grant
processing and turnaround. The selection committee endeavors to
have funding decisions made within eight weeks of application
    submission.

Funding is not restricted to United States citizens. Applicants
planning work in foreign countries should include at least one
local collaborator as part of their research teams. The selec-
tion committee will not consider applications seeking support
solely for laboratory work or archival research. This grant prog-
ram does not pay educational tuition, nor does it offer scholar-
ships or fellowships of any kind.

Applicants are not required to have advanced degrees to be eli-
gible for funding, though they will be required to show a com-
mensurate level of expertise and experience. Applicants must have
an affiliation with an educational organization or other
    institution.

National Geographic Society/Waitt grants are awarded on a rolling
basis and range from U.S. $5,000 to $15,000 each. Approximately a
hundred grants are made each year.

Grant recipients are expected to provide the National Geographic
Society with rights of first refusal for popular publication of
    their findings.
