Field Trip to Atlantic City, 11/03/07:
We went to see New Jersey's only Large Wind Turbines...
(psssst! you're going to hear a lot more about wind)
...plus Solar Energy, Geothermal, Biodiesel...

October 2009: CA & TX: A paradox? (NYT October 17, 2009).

October 2009: China could relinquish its dependence on coal by taking advantage of its wind resources (Science, via Nature).

October 2009: Wal-Mart uses wind energy (from November 2008; just discovered this)

September 2009: Hawaii and renewables... (NYT)

September 2009: World's First Floating Turbine (BBC) (thanks to the BBC, Hywind, Statoil, and Norway).

August 2009: Green energy hit by 'faceless Nimbys' in the UK I'm with Ed on this: "In 10 years' time people will look back and think, 'gosh, there was a huge fuss about this idea of renewable energy and wind energy but actually it was the right thing to do" -- Ed Miliband, Energy Minister).

August 2009: mostly away at NASA meeting/fieldwork in Alaska, so no news.

William Kamkwamba: YT video. Here he is being interviewed at TED. More here at Moving Windmills. Here is William's blog. Once again, hats off to the BBC for picking this up.

July 2009: A U.S. National Academy of Sciences paper: there's plenty of wind to go around. NYT quote "Using data from thousands of meteorological stations, the Harvard team estimated the world wind power potential to be 40 times greater than total current power consumption. A previous study cited in the paper put that multiple at about 7 times." This study used satellite remote sensing. NYT quoting AWEA: "further validation of what we've be saying -- that the United States is the Saudi Arabia of wind". Tip to New York Times. There is a larger map here.

July 2009: Short BBC video: How do you build a wind farm out at sea?

July 2009: Britain Could Be Wind and Wave Titan (NYT: Green Inc.)

July 2009: China surges ahead in renewables... (NYT). More opinion on China and environment (BBC). Tom Friedman comments...

July 2009: Wind 'can revolutionise UK power' (BBC)

June 2009: Floating turbines off Norway... (BBC News, Siemens Hywind 2.4 MW... to be launched by Statoil!)

June 2009: Wind and ranching: made for each other (BBC: Ranchers driving wind revolution + video).

I'm posting this BBC video again: as this is the one Dr. C. went up in 2007. Please listen for the deafening sound of the turbine blades turning just behind the presenter! (from BBC News: "RSPB calls for more UK wind farms", RSPB = "The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds").

May 2009: Europe's largest wind farm from the air: in Scotland (BBC)

May 2009: Glasgow, Scotland, goes renewable in a big way Congrats to the Scots. From the BBC: "Europe's largest wind farm to be expanded". Locals: "not as bad as we thought; could be good for the village".

May 2009: Save Birds by Promoting Wind Energy

May 2009: Er.... did we mention SUZLON? (oh, yes yes, we did, in May 2008).

May 2009: Work under way on large UK East coast wind farm (BBC)

May 2009: and now.... Colorado (note: "Today, most of the precision components for wind turbines are made in Europe and Asia." Why?).

April 2009: Spain leads the way... (stop the video/music first! uh, click on the video to pause it)

April 2009: RSPB calls for more UK wind farms (er, Earth to BBC: define your acronyms! RSPB = "The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds"). Surprised? the RSPB view

This was our chance to get up close and personal with some large wind turbines in the delightful setting of Atlantic City, New Jersey, and we grabbed it. We visited two Atlantic County Utilities Authority (ACUA) sites: the AC Wastewater Treatment Plant and the Solid Waste Facility. The Wastewater Treatment Plant has the only (relatively) large-scale wind power facility in New Jersey as well as a solar power project. Click to see web-cam video of New Jersey's only wind farm. This is the first coastal wind farm in the US and also the location of the second largest solar array in New Jersey. The wind farm has a total of 5 turbines with a combined output of 7.5 Megawatts. The Solid Waste Facility has a landfill gas to electricity plant, biodiesel distribution, geothermal heating and cooling, recycling and composting facilities, and a small fleet of hybrid vehicles.

Brief report: The view of the wind farm from Rte 30 on the approach to Atlantic City was stunning. Getting close up to the turbines allowed us to see that even in rather strong winds they make very little noise except for the slight "whoosh" when standing right underneath a turbine. The single bird accident in two years of operation shows a very low impact on wildfowl and also reflects the care that went into the development of the farm. It was not lost on the group that this is truly green power: these GE turbines will provide about 30 years of clean, emissions-free energy. Seeing a working wind farm up close and talking with the operator is one of the best ways to understand the potential of wind power and to see how little environmental impact the turbines have when properly sited. Hopefully the billions in subsidies and tax breaks currently afforded to the fossil fuel industry will at some point be transferred at least in part to renewable energy sources such as wind. While anyone in New Jersey can purchase power from the Jersey-Atlantic Wind Farm there is a (small) price increase that must be borne by the consumer -- this is in contrast to the choice offered to customers in the UK, who can purchase wind power at no additional cost. Let's hope the change is made soon.

Do Wind Turbines Make Noise? "No".

(see also the NIMBO video in the windy humor section). Is this criticism based on visibility and aesthetics also applied to locating oil rigs offshore? Thought not.

~ Wind Energy ~

Why Wind?     Reason #1...     Reason #2...     Reason #3...

People say things like "wind power currently accounts for only 1% of US energy needs". To that you might say: "so all we need are 100 times more wind turbines? How difficult is that?" Newer turbines are larger and more efficient, so fewer are needed.

Wind power is only one part of the solution to our climate disruption and national security problems. Scientists (from Princeton University right here in NJ) have come up with a WEDGE STRATEGY that shows how we could address the threats of climate disruption and national security using current technologies. Wind energy = 1 wedge.

This is the one Dr. C. went up in August '07. Video from Green.TV This report could have been better: it's not noisy (the drone is from C130s) and speeding up the film to make it look as if the blades whizz around might frighten some folks.
