Initial Certification Requirements:  Biology

Following is a list of the minimum biology and collateral science and mathematics course requirements for initial certification in Biology through Montclair State University (MSU).  All grades in courses used to meet certification requirements must be a C or better.


Professional education requirements can be found in the Montclair State University undergraduate catalog.


REQUIRED MSU BIOLOGY COURSES or equivalent (20 cr):

    Principles of Biology I (4 cr)

    Principles of Biology II  (4 cr)

    Introduction to Ecology  (4 cr)

    Cell & Molecular Biology (4 cr)

    Genetics (4 cr)


Approved Biology Electives (300 level or above)  (12 cr)


COLLATERAL SCIENCE REQUIREMENTS

    Chemistry – 16 cr    

General Chemistry I  (4 cr)

        General Chemistry II  (4 cr)

        Organic Chemistry I  (3 cr)

        Organic Chemistry II  (3 cr)

        Experimental Organic Chemistry  (2 cr)


    Physics I  (4 cr)

    Physics II (4 cr)


    Approved Earth Science  (4 cr)


COLLATERAL MATHEMATICS REQUIREMENTS  (7 – 8 cr from the following)

    Statistics  (3 cr)

    Pre-calculus Mathematics  (4 cr)

    Calculus A  (4 cr)

    Calculus I    (4 cr)

    Calculus II    (4 cr)
